National Solo Competition/Missouri State Solo Competition

The ASTA National Solo Competition will be held from March 16-19, 2011 in Kansas City, Missouri, in conjunction with the ASTA National Conference. The competition is open to ASTA student members or students of a current ASTA member with instrument categories of Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Harp and Guitar. For entry into the semi-final round, each state competition chair submits to the national chair the applications, fees and recordings of contestants from his/her state who have been selected.

The Missouri State Solo Competition will be by audio recording. Entries must be postmarked by October 8, 2010. Successful candidates at the state level will be permitted to participate in the 2011 ASTA National Competition semi-final round. All of the guidelines and repertoire requirements for the National competition are also required at the State level. Memorization is required at the National Finals. Students may find all guidelines, required repertoire (also posted below), labeling information for CDs, and entry forms for the National Competition at www.astaweb.com.

1) Missouri Solo Competition Entry Form (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to open this file.)

2) Nonrefundable entry fee of $35.00 made payable to MoASTA

3) CD recording of required repertoire and competitor’s choice work. Label CD jacket with name, address, division, instrument, and repertoire. Label CD itself with name, instrument, division and repertoire. (see front and back examples)

4) Photocopy of solo part or solo part with piano accompaniment (with measures numbered) of competitor’s choice piece. No photocopy is necessary for required repertoire.

5) Proof of birth date (copy of birth certificate, passport, driver’s license, etc.) Missouri winners will be notified and given their comments. They will be asked to send two copies of the ASTA National Competition Entry Form to Mr. Joseph Gutowski along with the $75.00 National entry fee payable to ASTA.

Missouri winners will also be given the option to re-record their CD before it is submitted to the National contest. This will provide an opportunity for the student to use the comments received by the judge and, if desired, produce a better recording.

I. Junior Division is open to musicians under the age of 19 born on or after March 20, 1992.

VIOLIN: Bach: Any movement from the Solo Sonatas or Partitas Saint-Saëns: Danse Macabre, op. 40- any edition transcribed by the composer Any piece of the contestant’s choice

VIOLA: Bach: Any movement from the Solo Cello Suites Vaughan-Williams: Prelude & Christmas Dance from the Suite for Viola & Orchestra, Group 1, movements 1 & 3 Any piece of the contestant’s choice 

CELLO: Bach: Any movement from the Solo Suites Bartok, arr. Silva: Roumanian Folk Dances (all movements) Any piece of the contestant’s choice

DOUBLE BASS: Bach: Any movement from the Solo Cello Suites Bottesini: Elegy in D Any piece of the contestant’s choice

II. Senior Division is open to musicians 19-25 born on or after March 20, 1986 and before March 20, 1992.
