All State Orchestra Auditions and Eligibility
The Missouri Chapter of ASTA is again sponsoring the Missouri All-State Orchestra. This extraordinary ensemble will rehearse and perform at the annual Missouri Music Educators Association Conference, January 27-30, 2010, at Tan Tar A Resort, Osage Beach.
The conductor or the 2010 All-State Orchestra will be Robert Gregg from Belmont University. This year’s program will include the following works: Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, and a commissioned work by Missouri composer, Kirt Mosier, entitled Run.
Students in grades 9 through 12 who are eligible under Missouri State High School Activities Association regulations are eligible to audition for the All-State Orchestra. The student’s school must be a MSHSAA member school. The student must be accompanied at the auditions by a certified teacher or administrator from his or her own school. This supervisor will sign in with the student and remain at the audition site during the audition process.
String Audition Information
All auditions are live, and blind. Judges do not see the student or have knowledge of the student’s identity. Students are chosen for the orchestra in order of score on the audition performance.
Auditions for the string sections in the Missouri All-State Orchestra take place on the first Saturday of December. The audition date for the 2010 All-State Orchestra is December 5, 2009. An alternate date is set for December 19, 2009, in case of inclement weather or other disaster. Auditions will be held at the Memorial Union on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus, with registration from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Each student’s audition will take place in the order in which he or she registers.
The string audition will consist of required scales and orchestral excerpts only. No solo will be required for the audition. This year’s required audition material is “Set II” of scales and orchestral excerpts. The required scales and orchestral excerpts are available on the MOASTA website. In addition, practice recordings of the audition material for the 2010 All-State Orchestra are available for download from the MOASTA website. The recordings will include all of the audition material required for the 2010 All-State Orchestra auditions.
Registration for the All-State Orchestra auditions is online. From this website, students should go to the tab for All-State Orchestra where the form for All-State Audition Registration is located. Students should complete the information requested and print the form. The printed form will allow the student to obtain the necessary signatures before bringing the form to the audition. After printing, the student should submit the form electronically. Students must have the application form complete with signatures and the $25.00 fee in order to register. The last day for online registration is Wednesday, November 25, 2009.
Results of the audition are posted on the MOASTA website immediately following the auditions. Music folders for those chosen for the orchestra will be distributed at the end of the audition process, either to the student or the student’s teacher. If there is nobody on site to receive a student’s folder, it will be mailed.
Wind and Percussion Information
Auditions for woodwind, brass and percussion players are held along with the band auditions, and are conducted by the Missouri Bandmasters Association. Students selected for All-State membership may choose to be members of the band or orchestra, in order of audition score, until all positions are filled. All students must meet MSHSAA eligibility requirements.
