All State Orchestra Auditions and Eligibility

Full All State Orchestra audition information is mailed to all MSHSAA member high schools in late summer or early fall.

Students in grades 9 through 12 who are eligible under Missouri State High School Activities Association regulations are eligible to audition for the All-State Orchestra. The student's school must be a MSHSAA member school. The student must be accompanied at the auditions by a certified teacher or administrator from his or her own school. This supervisor will sign in with the student and remain at the audition site during the audition process.

All auditions are live, and blind. Judges do not see the student or have knowledge of the student's identity. Students are chosen for the orchestra in order of score on the audition performance.

Auditions for the string sections in the Missouri All-State Orchestra take place on the first Saturday of December. The alternate date, in case of cancellation because of weather or other disaster, is the third Saturday in December. The place, process, and format of auditions on the alternate date will be the same as if they had taken place on the regularly scheduled date.

Auditions for brass, woodwind, and percussion players are held along with the band auditions, and are conducted by the Missouri Bandmasters Association. Students selected for All-State membership may choose to be members of the band or orchestra, in order of audition score, until all positions are filled.

Students must register online for the string section auditions. Fill out the online form, print it, get required signatures, and bring the form to the audition site.

The audition date for the 2009 All-State Orchestra is Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 with the alternate date Saturday, Dec. 20. Auditions will be held at the Memorial Union on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus, with registration from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Each student's audition will take place in the order in which he or she registers.

Results of the audition are posted on the MoASTA website immediately following the auditions. Music folders for those chosen for the orchestra will be distributed at the end of the audition process, either to the student or the student's teacher. If there is nobody onsite to receive a student's folder, it will be mailed.

Please direct questions regarding eligibility or audition process to Patti Fleer or Marilyn Humiston.
